21.01.2025

Viola Schmid, Philip R. Nigst and colleagues published a new paper on the research in Rose Cottage Cave (South Africa) in the 2024 volume of the peer-reviewed journal South African Archaeological Bulletin.

The paper gives a brief overview of the recent fieldwork at the site and first insights of this work. It also provides an overview of future directions of research at the site.
Rose Cottage Cave is a key sequence for the MSA and LSA in the southern African interior. The cave's deposits provide a unique palaeoenvironmental and chrono-cultural archive spanning a semi-continuous record from the Late Pleistocene to the 19th century.

The fieldwork at Rose Cottage Cave is lead by Dr. Viola Schmid, Austrian Archaeological Institute.
